POETRY

An Exceedingly Odd Dream

Yes, I really did dream this

I recently had an extremely odd dream.
It’s odd I remember and odd’s how it seemed:
The lawyers had vanished from all of the courts
and poets replaced them for crimes and for torts.
The rules then forbade presentation of fact
or evidence of any criminal act.
Instead, each fine poet would write, then recite,
in turns throwing volleys, each other to smite.

The jury would choose who the winner would be
and base their decision on best poetry.
I said this felt odd and, indeed, so it was.
but is it much worse for enforcement of laws
than how we now do it with lawyers in place,
each charging high dollar to handle the case?
In too many cases this billing by hour
results in awards to the side with the power.
