You won’t be missed

Note: Below the poem is an audio clip of the author reading the poem.

The final hours of this bad year
now slowly tick away.
I’m looking for an end to fear
and partisan affray.

Somehow I doubt that politics
can quickly be improved,
but public health gets its quick fix.
Vaccines just got approved.

Tradition says to celebrate,
to show that all is changed.
At midnight, we should recognize
how life is rearranged.

But I’m not that traditional.
I live a routine life.
If midnight gets emotional,
I’ll simply kiss my wife.
