Okay, I sympathize. But you leave me in a quandary. If I am not a white man, what am I? A European American (to adopt the same form as “African American”)? I don’t think America ready for me to be simply an American or simply a human. I can think of myself that way, all day long, but the self-fulfilling prophecy that “race” is and must remain a thing is not yet dying. And we have a few good reasons to keep it around for awhile. If we don’t track people’s race, how can we hope to know whether diversity targets are being met? We can and should ditch that tracking as soon as it becomes obsolete. To the best of my awareness, that has not happened. But, is the need to keep it retarding progress in the right direction? Beats me!
