Shock and Awe
A meteorologist’s musings
Note: Below the poem is an audio clip of the author reading the poem.
I am the Destroyer. Fear me.
I throw the thunder and lightning.
I power the hurricane and send the flood.
I carve my signature into grand canyons.
I freeze to break mountains.
I thaw to carry them off.
I eat the sun’s heat
and spew forth misery.
I take your life.
I am the Nurturer. Revere me.
I give life to your crops.
Without me, your livestock dies.
I paint the desert with flowers.
I bear your ships to foreign ports,
your food from farm to market.
I carry the sun’s heat
to warm your home.
I give you life.
I am Water. Respect me.
